About us

 The Society for the History of Western Learning in Japan (Yogakushi Gakkai, SHWLJ) is a learned society, found in 1991, whose goal is to promote the study of the History of Western Learning in Japan during the Edo- and early Meiji-era, its place within the history of thought and science, and its relation to cultural, social, and political movements.

 The SHWLJ meets every months except february and august. Each meeting features two papers by members or invited guests. Some monthly meetings are organized at selected locations throughout Japan in collaboration with other learned associations.

 The SHWLJ cooperates with the Jitsugaku Shiryo Kenkyukai, the Kansai Branch of the Japan Society of Medical History,the Ito Keisuke Monjo Kenkyukai and maintains close ties with other related learned societies and organizations.

 The Annals of the Society for the History of Western Learning in Japan (Yogaku) appear each spring and fall as a journal of articles, source materials, reviews, translations, and bibliographical information.Submitted papers are blind-reviewed. Members also receive a Newsletter (Yogakushigakkai Tsushin) twice a year.

 Regular dues are Yen 7000 per year. Student dues are Yen 3000 per year. Organisation dues are 10 000 Yen per year. Payment of dues includes a subscription to the Annals of the Society.
